There are more than a thousand volatile organic compounds (VOCs) :
The most VOCs in the air are methane, toluene, butane, pentane, ethane, benzene, propane and ethylene.These compounds are produced in all industrial processes using organic solvents such as acetaldehyde, benzene, aniline, carbon tetracloride, trichloroethane, acetone, ethanol, etc.

All that VOCs, plus nitrogen oxides and sunlight, are very bad for your health because it can cause serious respiratory damage. Moreover, VOCs are usually odorant substances and therefore have a very negative impact on the environment when produced.

Contaminants in the gas adhere to the surface of the activated carbon particles according to a balancing operation.Once it is exhausted, no more pollutant molecules can be adsorbed, and changing environmental conditions can produce desorption of pollutants, thereby regenerating activated carbon for reuse.Activated carbon filtration treatment is based on the adsorption capacity of activated carbon to remove low concentrations of various pollutants, such as VOCs, hydrogen sulfide, siloxane, chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons, and dioxins.

In classical activated carbon filtration, adsorption occurs in the direction of pollutant molecules adhering to carbon particles.When the filter becomes saturated, it must be replaced and regenerated (by incineration or thermal reactivation).
