Activated Carbon for PVC Manufacturing

What is PVC?

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a synthetic plastic that is widely used in construction, piping, cables, packaging and other applications.

Principle of Activated Carbon Mercury Chloride Catalyst for PVC Production:

Mercury compounds are widely used in this process, but due to their environmental and health risks, the introduction of activated carbon as a carrier is intended to reduce the amount of mercury used and its impact on the environment and to meet environmental regulations.

Role of Activated Carbon:

Catalytic mechanism: Activated carbon, as a carrier for the catalyst, provides a large specific surface area and a good porous structure, which allows vinyl chloride monomer to polymerise on its surface. The activated carbon adsorbs mercury compounds, which participate in the polymerisation reaction on the surface of the activated carbon, thus increasing the reaction rate.

Improvement of reaction efficiency: By using activated carbon carriers, the amount of mercury can be effectively reduced and the activity and selectivity of the catalyst can be improved to facilitate the reaction.

Activated carbon mercury-containing catalysts in PVC production not only enhance production efficiency, but also provide an important solution for environmental protection and safe production.

Huamei carbon company specialises in the production of top grade activated carbon mercury chloride catalyst , and the production process is briefly described below:
top grade activated carbon+acid washing to remove iron molecules+use of mercuric chloride and water for proportioning, soak the activated carbon through liquid circulation, when the mercury content of the activated carbon reaches the required level, then drying, sieving and packaging.

HM-MCC series are super active Activated carbon mercury catalyst with the following advantages:

  • Large specific surface area, which provides more active sites for the catalyst.
  • Moderate pore volume provides good conditions for adsorption and diffusion of reactants.
  • High impregnation volume and uniform distribution: ensure catalyst activity and reaction efficiency.
  • Good mechanical strength, avoiding pulverisation and fragmentation during the reaction process, ensuring the stability and life of the catalyst.
  • Resistant to high temperature and chemical corrosion, it can still maintain stable performance under high temperature and strong corrosive gas environment.
  • Low ash and impurity content, improving the stability and selectivity of the catalyst.
