Exhaust Gases in Liquefied Natural Gas Vehicles
1. Combustion products: LNG as a fuel will produce a large amount of VOCs, H2S, carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and so on after combustion in the engine. These combustion products are similar to the composition of exhaust gases produced by conventional fuel vehicles (e.g., gasoline and diesel vehicles).
2. LNG Evaporated Gas: LNG is natural gas stored and transported in liquid form. When exposed to heat or reduced pressure, a portion of the liquefied natural gas will transition into gaseous natural gas, forming LNG boil-off gas. This released boil-off gas emanates from the vehicle's storage and transportation system, becoming a waste gas.
Exhaust Gas Treatment System
In order to reduce the generation and emission of exhaust gases and to protect the environment and human health, LNG vehicles are usually equipped with an exhaust gas treatment system, which generally consists of the following parts:
- Activated Carbon Cartridges: Activated carbon cartridges are usually installed in the exhaust gas discharge piping of vehicles to adsorb organic substances, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the exhaust gas, and purify the exhaust gas. The activated carbon cartridge needs to be replaced regularly.
- Ternary Catalytic Converter: Used to reduce the emission of harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons (HC) from exhaust gases. It is purified by converting these harmful gases into harmless nitrogen (N2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water vapor.
- Other auxiliary equipment: Depending on the circumstances, other auxiliary equipment, such as oxygen sensors, exhaust gas recirculation systems, etc., may be installed to improve the efficiency of exhaust gas treatment and reduce emissions.
