What is landfill gas?

Landfill gas is the gas produced in landfills and consists mainly of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), with a small proportion of other impurities such as nitrogen, oxygen, and siloxane. These gases are produced by the decomposition of organic waste in the waste in the landfill.

The Role of Landfill Gas

Landfill gas can be collected and utilized for several purposes: energy production, fuel substitution, etc.
Energy production: Methane from landfills can be collected and used as an energy source, for example for electricity or heating. By capturing and burning methane in landfills, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced and it can be converted into renewable energy.
Fuel substitution: Methane can be extracted and purified and then used as a substitute for conventional fuels, such as natural gas. This use can reduce dependence on finite resources, lower energy costs as well as reduce environmental pollution.

Huamei Activated Carbon for Landfill Gas

We have recently established a partnership with an energy company in the Middle East, one of whose projects is to collect and purify methane from landfill gas for use in engine fuel supply. The activated carbon required by the company is used to adsorb siloxane, hydrogen sulphide, and other gases from the landfill gas, making the methane it collects purer.

Few Points in Treating Landfill Gas

When using activated carbon to treat landfill gas, the following aspects need to be taken into account:
  1. Choosing the right activated carbon: Various types of activated carbon have different adsorption effects on different harmful gases. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right activated carbon according to the actual situation in order to ensure the adsorption effect and treatment efficiency.
  2. Determining the appropriate placement and quantity: Activated carbon should be placed within the landfill, usually under or around the landfill area. For optimal treatment, the appropriate placement and quantity need to be determined.
  3. Regular replacement of activated carbon: Activated carbon is gradually saturated as it absorbs harmful gases and therefore needs to be replaced regularly. The interval between replacements is determined by the practical situation and is usually every three or six months.
  4. Avoiding secondary contamination: both treated hazardous gases and used activated carbon need to be disposed of properly to avoid secondary contamination. Suitable disposal measures can be taken, such as incineration or landfill.
  5. Regular testing and maintenance: To ensure the effectiveness of activated carbon in treating landfill gas, the activated carbon facility needs to be tested and maintained on a regular basis. Testing includes the adsorption effectiveness, placement, and replacement time of the activated carbon. Maintenance includes cleaning, replacement, etc.
