In many aspects of industrial production, environmental governance, and even daily life, gas purification is a key step to ensure safety, health, and compliance. Among them, activated carbon adsorption technology has become a well-deserved star solution in the field of gas purification due to its excellent efficiency and wide applicability. So, how exactly does activated carbon purify the gas? How to choose activated carbon in different scenarios? What kind of scientific principles are hidden behind it?
The purifying power of activated carbon stems from its unique internal structure. Imagine that after the internal pore structure of a small piece of high-quality activated carbon is expanded, its surface area may be comparable to the size of a football field (the specific surface area is usually as high as 1000-1500 square meters/gram). This well-developed pore network, especially the rich micropores, constitutes a huge “molecular trap”.
When a gas containing impurities (whether it is VOCs, volatile organic compounds, foul-smelling gases, hydrogen sulfide, solvent vapor, or other harmful substances) passes through the activated carbon bed, the gas molecules will collide with the huge inner surface of the activated carbon during movement. At this time, the powerful Van der Waals force (physical adsorption) will firmly “grasp” most molecules and bind them to the inner wall of the pore channel. For some specific harmful gases (such as acid gases, mercury vapor, etc.), activated carbon can also undergo chemical reactions (chemical adsorption) with special chemicals loaded on the surface to transform or fix them. This process efficiently separates and removes target pollutants and clean gases.

Activated carbon is not the same. According to different gas compositions, concentration, humidity, temperature, and purification requirements, different types of activated carbon need to be selected to achieve the best results.:
- Features: High-quality anthracite coal is used as raw material, with high mechanical strength, good wear resistance, large adsorption capacity, and well-developed microporous structure.
- Good at purification: benzene, toluene, xylene, and other benzene products, non-polar or weakly polar small molecule organic gases, and some solvent vapors. It is one of the most commonly used and economical varieties of industrial VOC governance.
Features: The use of biomass raw materials such as wood or coconut husk, low ash content, few impurities, well-developed pores (the proportion of pores is relatively high), and a fast adsorption rate.
Good at purification: organic gases with slightly larger molecular weights (such as ketones and esters), some chlorine-containing organic matter, complex mixed organic waste gases, and certain special odors. It is especially suitable for occasions where the food and pharmaceutical industries require high purity.
- Features: The carbone attivo in polvere is combined with a special adhesive to form a honeycomb-like regular structure. The biggest advantage is that the air flow resistance is extremely low (small pressure drop).
- Good at purification: large air volume, medium and low concentrations of VOCs, and odor gases. It is widely used in large-scale exhaust gas treatment systems in coating, printing, electronics, furniture, and other industries, with significant energy-saving effects.
- Features: Load specific chemicals (such as potassium permanganate, potassium iodide, copper oxide, zinc oxide, sodium hydroxide, phosphoric acid, etc.) on the surface of activated carbon (particles or honeycomb) through a special process.
- Good at purification: through chemical adsorption or catalysis, it specializes in removing specific gases that are difficult to handle by physical adsorption.:
-- Alkaline impregnated carbon: efficiently removes acidic, sulfur-containing, and foul-smelling gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and thiols.
-- Acid impregnated carbon: effectively removes alkaline and foul-smelling gases such as ammonia (NH3) and amines.
-- Heavy metal adsorption of carbon (such as iodization and vulcanization): strong capture of mercury vapor (Hg), hydrogen arsenide (AsH3), and other heavy metal vapors.
-- Catalytic impregnated carbon: promotes the oxidative decomposition or transformation of certain organic matter.
- Features: High-quality coal or wood granular charcoal with a specific pore size distribution is usually selected, which has extremely high adsorption capacity and excellent desorbed properties.
- Application: It is specially used to adsorb and recover valuable organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol, toluene, trichloroethylene, gasoline, etc., to realize resource recycling and reduce operating costs.
