Coal-based pellet (extruded) activated carbon in 3mm or 4mm diameter is the industry standard for fixed-bed VOC adsorption. The key spec is CTC value (carbon tetrachloride activity) — aim for ≥60%. Higher CTC means more vapor-phase adsorption capacity and longer bed life between regeneration or replacement cycles.
It depends on gas flow rate, VOC concentration, and target outlet concentration. A typical industrial adsorber treating 10,000–30,000 m³/hr of exhaust uses 15–25 tons of carbon per vessel. Most systems have 2–3 vessels (one adsorbing, one regenerating, one on standby). Annual replacement or top-up is typically 15–25% of total bed volume.
3mm pellets have more surface area per unit volume (better removal efficiency) but create higher pressure drop. 4mm pellets have lower pressure drop (less fan energy needed) but slightly lower removal kinetics. For high-flow industrial systems (>20,000 m³/hr), 4mm is usually preferred. For smaller systems or when emission limits are very tight, 3mm may be worth the extra pressure drop.
Typically 12–18 months before replacement is needed, depending on inlet VOC concentration and whether the system includes thermal regeneration. With on-site steam or hot nitrogen regeneration, the same carbon can last 3–5 years before adsorption capacity degrades below useful levels. Without regeneration, it's a one-time use with 12–18 month life.
