52 Tons of Coconut Shell Granular Carbon Shipped to Turkey for Drinking Water Filter Cartridge Manufacturing
In July 2026, Huamei Carbon completed a shipment of 52 tons of coconut shell granular activated carbon to a filter cartridge manufacturer in Turkey. Unlike our gold recovery orders, this carbon is destined for a different job: it will be packed into point-of-use water filter cartridges sold across Turkey and the wider Middle East market for household and commercial drinking water treatment.
This order is a good example of why the “right” activated carbon is never a single grade — it depends entirely on what the carbon has to do.

Why 8×30 Mesh Coconut Shell for Drinking Water Cartridges
Filter cartridge manufacturing has very different priorities from a gold CIL circuit. The client chose coconut shell carbon at 8×30 mesh for three reasons:
- Coconut shell, not coal-based. Drinking water demands low ash and a micropore-dominated structure. Coconut shell activated carbon is naturally low in ash (≤3%) and rich in the small pores that capture chlorine, chloramine, taste, odor and dissolved organics — exactly the contaminants a household filter has to remove. Coal-based carbon has more impurities and a broader pore range that is better suited to industrial or gas work, not point-of-use drinking water.
- 8×30 mesh for cartridge packing. This particle size packs evenly into a cartridge housing, giving a consistent flow rate and low pressure drop while keeping enough contact time (EBCT) for adsorption. Larger granules leave voids and let water channel through untreated; finer material chokes the flow and generates dust.
- High hardness for a clean product. At ≥98% hardness, the carbon resists breakdown during transport, cartridge filling and use. Low-hardness carbon sheds fines that discolor the first liters of filtered water — a complaint no cartridge brand wants from its customers.
Low Ash and Low Dust Matter Most Here
For a drinking water product, two things carry more weight than raw iodine value:
- Ash content. High ash can leach minerals and affect taste and pH. Our coconut shell carbon runs 2–3% ash, well within drinking water expectations.
- Dust and fines. Cartridge manufacturers pre-wash or specify low-dust carbon so end users don’t see “black water” on first use. Our granular coconut shell carbon is washed and screened to keep fines low straight out of the bag.
This is the opposite of what we optimize for on gold recovery orders, where hardness and gold-loading capacity lead. Same factory, same coconut shell raw material — different grade tuned for the application.
Packaging & Shipping
All 52 tons were packed in 25 kg polypropylene woven bags with an inner PE liner for moisture protection, then palletized and loaded into standard containers. The 25 kg bag format is convenient for cartridge production lines, where carbon is dosed by the bag into filling hoppers.
The shipment was loaded at port and sent via sea freight to Turkey, with a full batch certificate of analysis accompanying the order.
