The fastest check is hardness testing. Pure coconut shell activated carbon delivers 97–99% hardness (ball-pan method). If results come back 90–93%, contamination is likely. Density measurement is the second indicator — apricot shell is lighter (0.40–0.45 g/mL vs 0.48–0.55 for coconut). For definitive confirmation, send samples to an independent lab for raw material identification.
Cost. Apricot shell raw material is $300–500/ton cheaper than quality coconut shell. Mixing 25–35% into each batch increases profit margin significantly per ton. The visual similarity makes it hard to detect without testing. Suppliers who do this are betting you won't test — or won't test often enough.
Poorly compared to coconut shell. Lower hardness means more breakage in CIL/CIP circuits, which means gold losses to fine carbon that can't be recovered. Lower density means less gold adsorption per unit volume. It's functional for less demanding applications, but it's not suitable for gold recovery where mechanical strength is critical.
Coconut shell has higher fixed carbon content (73–76%), producing activated carbon with superior hardness (97–99%) and density. Apricot shell has lower fixed carbon (~60–65%), resulting in softer carbon (85–93% hardness) that breaks down faster under mechanical stress.
